The Richlands Wastewater Treatment plant had a release of partially treated wastewater and solids that occurred on January 2, 2014 at the plant’s discharge site into Squires Run. The partial release was a result of extensive rains which occurred in the Richlands area. The plant received high flow surges that drastically reduced its ability to provide full treatment of the wastewater, however, the level of treatment was approximately 80% and the estimated volume of the release is approximately 35,000 gallons. The current plant design is rated for treatment of .250 MGD, however, the surges delivered flows in excess of .600 MGD. ONWASA staff remained onsite during the event and additional disinfection measures were taken. The North Carolina Division of Water Resources was notified of the incident by phone. ONWASA is continuing to investigate the situation and a report will be provided to NCDWQ within 5 days of the event.
